Kindle 2.5.2 Screen Saver Hack Information

After a confusing morning, here is what I found.  The files are easy to work with ... but, to install the new screen saver hack, you HAVE to install the "jailbreak" hack first.

  1. Download the "jailbreak file."
  2. Unzip the file and copy the "jailbreak" file for your Kindle type (in this case "K3" = "DX") to its root directory (not into any folder on it).
  3. Disconnect your Kindle from your PC and do Home -> Menu -> Settings -> Update Your Kindle. The update process will start, then it will say that it failed. That is expected and is OK!
  4. Reconnect your Kindle to your PC and now copy the screensaver install file and the linkss/ folder (in the src/ folder) for your Kindle type to the Kindle's root directory.
  5. Select the Update Your Kindle option again, and wait for the install and restart to complete.
  6. You can now add/delete screensaver image files to your 2.5.x Kindle once again.

NOTE:

There are a couple of items to be aware of ...

If you want to change your custom screensavers _after_ the installation, you'll have to restart your Kindle in order to take your new screensavers into account. You can either use the autoreboot feature, or simply do a full restart of your Kindle.

To use the autoreboot feature: Just drop a blank "reboot" file in the linkss/ folder (by copying and renaming the already existing "autoreboot" blank file, for example), and your Kindle will do a quick reboot 10s after you've unplugged it!

If you want to make the order in which your screensavers will appear more or less random, create a blank "random" file in the linkss/ folder (right alongside the auto file), and then do a full restart of your Kindle!.

Pre-2.5.2 Screen Saver Hack

I was installing images after running the BIN from the links here.  The new images were not being displayed.  Basically, what I learned is that the BIN needs loaded and installed each time a new image or images are loaded into the correct folder.
